ImageContemplation of OM and
meditation on OM is perhaps the first practice of
Yoga. This poster, based on an original painting by Pieter
Weltevrede of
a Himalayan
Sadhu in deep meditation has lots of great information
about the OM and suggestions for your practice of contemplation
and meditation. Text of the insets
appear below. It comes in 3 sizes 22"x28", 16"x20" and
8"x10". The 8"x10" version has no text
insets about practice and will come with a separate print
out of the practices, shown below.
NEW: We are now pleased to offer this picture in 1.5 inch wide wood frames in black and blonde and 1.25 inch wide wood frames with antiqued gold laminate to compliment this poster. Your artwork will be hand-framed, without glass, protected by our optically clear lamination for easy care, and safety. Your frame(s) will be backed with archival paper and an easy to use serrated hanging bar for quick display. Each item is individually framed to order and may take up to 4 weeks to ship. If ordered with other items, those items will be shipped separately on our normal schedule at no additional charge.
About the lamination: The thin, optically clear,
high gloss, polyester lamination protects the poster, increases
durability and makes it possible to clean it with a damp
cloth. Plus the lamination really brings out the colors
of this already vibrant and beautiful item. For those who
plan on framing the poster, it means you can leave out
the glass if you want to.

Text of the Insets:
OM
is the essence of all mantras, the origin of all creation,
the energy that pervades the universe.
OM represents the cosmic consciousness that is in each of us and all around
us.
Meditation on OM opens our innermost being to the vibrations of that higher
reality.
Tratak on OM
Place an image of the OM at eye level(this poster or some other image can be
used) at a place where you can sit before it comfortably and the image
fills one half your field of vision. Soften your breathing and relax the
body. Gaze gently but with complete attention at the OM, without blinking
for about one minute. Close your eyes and focus on the after image of the
OM at the space between the eyebrows, till the image disappears. Repeat.
Do a minimum of 5 repetitions. With regular practice you will be able to
lengthen the time with the eyes open and closed and practice for up to
one hour. If taking in the whole OM is uncomfortable, trace the line of
the OM slowly, counter clockwise. When other thoughts intrude, gently bring
your self back to your concentration.
OM Mantra Repetition
In a comfortable seated position with back straight and head erect gently lower
the eyelids and close the eyes almost completely. After a few minutes relaxing
the breath and body, inhale completely, shape the lips in the form of an “O” and
produce and “Ahhh” sound. Slowly close your lips. When they
come together, they will make an “MMM” sound. Continue till
you need to take your next breath and repeat. Try to make all three sections “A-U-M” equal
in length. While inhaling concentrate on the after vibration of the OM.
Practice this daily for 5 minutes, working up to 15 minutes.
Meditation on OM
In a comfortable seated position with back straight and head erect gently lower
the eyelids and close the eyes almost completely. After a few minutes relaxing
the breath and body, mentally produce the sound of “OM”. Hold
this sound continuously in your mind. Feel the vibration of the OM merging
with all other vibrations in the in the Universe. Do this for up to half
an hour.
OM Japa
On a clean sheet of writing paper, write the OM symbol over and over, till
the sheet is filled. Give each OM your complete attention before beginning
the next. An interesting variation is to create patterns with the OMs as
you fill the sheet.
A Special Practice
On a clean sheet of rice paper write very small OMs. When the paper is full,
cut out each OM and wrap it in a small piece of soft bread. Take the bread
balls out for a walk and feed them to animals and friends that you encounter.
Imagine the OM pulsing at the heart of all living creatures.
