Yoga Life Style Beginner's Package

If you are a true beginner,
just starting to practice and you want to make rapid progress,
the best thing you can do is to practice daily or at least 3 or
4 times a week. Generally, to accomplish this, you need to have
a specific time of day, early morning or early evening works for
many people, set aside to practice, a specific place to do it and
a sense of humor about missing a day or two. You cannot buy these
things.
These are details you must figure out for your self and you must
have the will to carry them out. Taking classes helps because it
informs
you as to what to practice and provides you with the important
support of like minded people and a model to follow.
Having said this, certain items can reinforce
and enhance this process. Classes can be expensive and time consuming, so
a home practice may be necessary or desirable for other reasons, but as
a
beginner,
you
may be in a quandary as to how to start. That is where the "28 Day
Yoga Exercise
Plan"
by Richard Hittleman comes in. In this book, Hittleman gives you an easy
introduction to 3 well organized routines that can be accomplished
in one half hour each.
He gives
modifications
for every level of flexibility or lack thereof and millions of students
have learned from this great resource, so there is no question of it's value.
Plus in just 28 days, if you follow the program carefully, you will know
most of the major postures.
A second item, valuable for a home practice, is the Beginner/Intermediate
course chart by Sri Yogi Dharma Mittra. In this wonderful poster,
Dharma outlines two well rounded series, giving detailed instructions
for each pose and lots of special information about yoga, anatomy
and spiritual growth. Combined with the Hittleman book, it will give
you a wider range of poses suitable for your practice and expose
you to another view of yoga. As you progress you will see that there
is not one yoga, but each teacher and in fact each practitioner has
his or her own path. Much is common to all, but variety helps the
sadhaka (student of yoga) to retain interest.
Finally, while it is absolutely not necessary,
you may want a yoga mat. When you are just starting out, you might be better
off with a towel, blanket or some other floor covering that you do not have
to buy. Once you are committed to practice a mat is a handy tool. It helps
establish your place of yoga and ensures comfort, cleanliness and a non-slip
surface.
