Instruction
Yin Yoga
by Paul Grilley

All yoga teacher's with the possible
exception of Bikram, encourage you to listen to your body
and do what feels right. Many then rush you through a series
of exercises designed to keep you active,
sweaty, make you stronger and barely give you time enough,
before
each
posture change, to do any sensing of what your body needs
or is capable of. With Yin Yoga you are encouraged to hold
each Yin pose, done within your comfort zone, not someone
else's vision of the pose but your own, for 3 to 5 minutes
so you
can really experience the transformative effects
of
the
activity. Yang poses, which are more strenuous may be held
for lesser periods of time. This is a deeply restful, healing
and meditative practice that everyone can benefit from. It
is truly an antidote to the stresses of our hectic lives.
Beginning and more advanced versions of each pose are given
with simple, clear photographic and text descriptions. Since
this practice is deeply meditative and can be used as a preparation
for meditation, instructions for meditation on the chakras
and the breath are given. A
brief explanation of the Chinese meridian theory on which
Yin Yoga is based is also included.
Paul
Grilley is the foremost proponent of this gentle, deep and restorative practice.
A yoga teacher for nearly 30 years, Paul
is an internationally respected expert and presenter. He
practices postures in the style of Paulie Zink, has studied anatomy at UCLA and
has been a student
of Shinto priest Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama since 1989.
