Ashtanga
DISCONTINUEDAshtanga Yoga
The Intermediate Series
by Gregor Maehle

Ashtanga Yoga, the
Intermediate Series, provides the student of Ashtanga
with an intimate description of the principles
of traditional Ashtanga
Yoga. This information-packed and detail-oriented textbook
combines both the wisdom and anatomy of yogic
posture seamlessly. Gregor Maele offers storytelling
and yogic philosophy alongside of the scientific
study of asana in a way that bridges body with spirit, as
is the very root of yoga. Few
textbooks provide
a study of anatomy with such context
in myth and philosophy.
Maehle slows down the Ashtanga practice to provide
meticulous introspection on each of the twenty-seven postures of the Intermediate
Series. The text includes extensive photography, anatomical
drawings, and sidebars full of tips and pointers.
The
guide includes sections focusing on the eight core principles of
Ashtanga Yoga, including Dyana (meditation), Asana (posture),
Dharana (concentration), Yama (restraint), and Niyama (observance),
with conscious guidance on how to practice each. You can
also read about the origin and practice of each of the three forms of
yoga: Karma, Bhakti, and Jnana. Maehle touches on the
importance of learning Sanskrit tradition, as well as the mythology behind
each one of the yogic postures in the Ashtanga series.
This is Gregor Maele’s follow up to his first
book, Ashtanga
Yoga: Practice and Philosophy.
