8 Levels of Practice for Body and Soul

In Beyond
Power Yoga, Bender Birch takes us deep into the classical astanga yoga system, bringing her trademark high-intensity flow to a total practice for mind, body and spirit. She draws spiritual and philosophical context from astanga's eight limbs of yoga and a study of the eight chakras while also providing advice for practical application of these ideas in our practice. Her explanation of each limb is followed by techniques designed to engage the corresponding chakra including postures, mudras (hand gestures) and chanting.
Bender Birch structures her book around the eight limbs described by the Yoga Sutras:
- Yamas (restraints)
- Niyamas (observances)
- Asanas (posture)
- Pranayama (breath)
- Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses)
- Dharana (concentration)
- Dhyana (meditation)
- Samadhi (bliss or superconsciousness)
The chapters paint an increasingly detailed picture of the eight-limbed path. Through Bender Birch's down-to-earth examinations of yoga texts and liberal samplings from her personal story, the reader is taken on the journey through the nuances of astanga practice. Plus, Bender Birch provides step-by-step instructions for exercises tailored to each limb - from traditional asanas to chanting, mudras and mantras - and gives pull out pose charts for easy reference on the mat.

Beryl Bender Birch began her teaching career in 1974 and was introduced to astanga in 1980 by Norman Allen, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois' first American student. She went on to found The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute and teaches classical astanga eight-limbed methodology worldwide.
