Becoming Vegan
By Brenda Davis, R.D. & Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D.

This book is the antidote
to the crazies. Whether it is the crazy vegans who insist
any other way to eat is immoral and debilitating, or the
crazy meat eaters who want to trick vegans into eating animal
based
foods to
"save them". It is a serious, soothing book that does its
best to give you all the facts so if you choose to persue
a vegan foodstyle you can do so healthfully and with confidence.
The authors are two of North America's foremost vegetarian
dieticians and they do not have an axe to grind, except that
we should all take care of ourselves and each other and get
along.
In this
book they cover everything you need to know to
do well as a vegan. It is the most valuable book I've seen on this topic
in decades.
Highlights include:
- A thorough vegan food guide that makes healthy daily meal planning easy.
- An exhaustive examination of the proper role of dietary fat and essential fatty
acids in the vegan diet, inlcuding Omega 3s.
- Everything a vegan needs to know about vitamins and minerals, with a special
focus on calcium, vitamin B12 and iron.
- A convincing
and well researched explanation on how plant proteins are
not only sufficient but actually preferable to animal protein
as a human food source.
- A detailed
look at the relationship between diet and chronic disease
and the protective effects of vegan
diets.
- Special
recommendations for each stage of life including infancy,
childhood, adolescence, old age, pregnancy and lactation.
- Special
advice for vegan athletes.
- A unique and much needed discussion on how to be a diplomatic
vegan who remains heart centered, even in the most challenging
situations.
