At one time or another every serious yogi will want to spend time exploring this hard to find book. After the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (various versions of each are found elsewhere on this site), the Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a foundational text of yoga. The author, Svatmarama set down in text an outline of the physical postures, breathing exercises, mudras and various other practices that composed the Hatha Yoga of his time. This is the first surviving text to do so, so in some sense, all asana primers that have followed are based on this book.
     When reading this fine translation from Brian Dana Akers, it is easy to imagine yourself practicing this ancient art and fun to try to follow his instructions or imagine yourself doing so. Like many older texts it is full of exaggeration the modern reader might scoff at and cultural assumptions that we do not necessarily share. Still, this is the cloud that sent the rain of hatha yoga into the many rivers and streams we now reside next to and bathe in and regularly drink deeply of. It is nice to know where the water comes from.
